In a landmark step toward sustainable urban development, the National Institute of Tuberculosis and Respiratory Diseases (NITRD) has been officially recognized as a “Zero Waste to Landfill” institution under the Swachh Bharat Mission Urban 2.0. The achievement positions the institute as a national benchmark for environmentally responsible waste management in India’s healthcare sector.
Spread across a 27-acre campus, NITRD generates nearly 1 to 1.2 tonnes of waste daily, including a significant proportion of biodegradable waste. Operating under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, the institute has now achieved full compliance as a Bulk Waste Generator under the 2026 Solid Waste Management Guidelines, demonstrating a strong commitment to sustainable practices.
The transformation was implemented by the Why Waste Wednesdays Foundation through its flagship program “Swachh Sankalp.” The initiative began with a detailed waste audit and baseline survey to identify inefficiencies and gaps. This was followed by an extensive awareness campaign, including nearly 50 customised training sessions for hospital staff and administrators, fostering behavioural change and accountability toward waste segregation and recycling.
To support its zero-waste goals, NITRD developed robust infrastructure, including a Wet Waste Composting Centre, a Dry Waste Resource Centre and dedicated horticulture waste management systems. The installation of 40 composting bins and two shredders has further enhanced the institute’s capacity to process biodegradable and green waste efficiently. A monitoring station ensures real-time oversight, enabling smooth and sustainable operations across the campus.
The South Zone of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi also played a key role by inaugurating Aerobin composting units at the facility, strengthening its waste management ecosystem.
Officials noted that the initiative demonstrates how large healthcare institutions can adopt eco-friendly practices without compromising operational efficiency or patient care. Beyond its immediate impact, the project serves as a scalable and replicable model for hospitals across India.
The success of NITRD underscores the power of structured planning, institutional commitment, and collective action in achieving sustainability goals. It also reinforces India’s broader push toward cleaner urban ecosystems, setting a precedent for responsible waste management in the healthcare sector nationwide.
