Flexible workspace provider WeWork India has announced plans to develop a 10 MWp (DC) ground-mounted solar power plant in Karnataka, a move that will accelerate its transition to 100% renewable electricity by March 2028 while reducing long-term energy costs across its operations.
The project, targeted for commissioning in FY27 and expected to be operational by Q1 2027, is projected to generate 15–16 million units of clean electricity annually. Around 80% of the electricity generated will power 10 WeWork India centres in Bengaluru, while the remaining 20% will be earmarked to support the company’s future expansion.
The investment is expected to increase the share of renewable electricity across WeWork India’s portfolio from nearly 40% to approximately 50%, marking a significant step toward its 2028 renewable energy target.
Karnataka was chosen as the location for the project because Bengaluru is WeWork India’s largest market, with 30 operational centres accounting for roughly 30% of the company’s total electricity consumption across its portfolio. The solar plant will allow the company to replace a meaningful portion of conventional grid electricity with renewable power.
Karan Virwani, Managing Director and CEO of WeWork India, said the investment is designed to deliver both environmental and financial benefits over the long term. “Bengaluru is our largest market, making it the natural starting point for an investment of this scale. As we grow, we want a greater share of that growth to be powered by clean energy, but we also want sustainability to make strong business sense,” Virwani said.
He added that owning renewable generation capacity would help reduce the company’s carbon footprint while providing greater certainty over energy costs for the next 25 years.
The solar plant has been designed with a 25-year operational life, enabling WeWork India to secure a more predictable electricity supply for a significant portion of its Bengaluru operations. The company said the project is expected to deliver electricity at a more competitive cost over the asset’s lifespan, helping improve operating efficiencies at the centres it serves.
The initiative forms part of WeWork India’s broader energy strategy, which combines owned renewable generation, captive consumption and open-access power procurement to create a diversified energy sourcing model aimed at lowering emissions and reducing exposure to grid tariff fluctuations.
The company said the investment reflects its broader effort to integrate sustainability into the expansion of its workspace portfolio. As businesses increasingly seek to reduce emissions across their operations and supply chains, access to workspaces powered by cleaner energy can help tenants advance their own sustainability commitments.
The Karnataka solar project also marks WeWork India’s shift from primarily procuring renewable electricity to making direct investments in renewable generation infrastructure as it continues expanding its footprint.
