Andhra Pradesh targets global leadership in Green Energy with ₹22,000 cr corridor plan

Andhra Pradesh is set to take a major leap in renewable energy infrastructure with plans to establish a massive Green Energy Corridor aimed at integrating 18 GW of renewable energy into the state’s main power grid. Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu said the state should emerge as a global hub for green energy, digital transformation and cybersecurity.

During a high-level review meeting at the Secretariat, officials briefed the Chief Minister on Green Energy Corridor Phase-III proposals worth nearly ₹22,000 crore. The project will facilitate the transmission of around 11 GW of solar power and 7 GW generated through pumped storage projects. To support this expansion, the state plans to construct 2,261 kilometres of transmission lines and establish five major pooling stations with a combined capacity of 9,500 MW at Mudigubba, Talupula, Ramayapatnam, Porumamilla and Koppaka.

Naidu emphasised that Andhra Pradesh has set an ambitious target of generating 160 GW of green energy and that future-ready infrastructure must be developed accordingly. He noted that the Green Energy Corridor would not only strengthen power supply reliability but also support upcoming data centres and attract large-scale investments into the state.

The review meeting also focused on the implementation of the PM Surya Ghar and PM-KUSUM schemes, as well as the solarisation of government buildings across Andhra Pradesh. Officials informed the Chief Minister that solarisation work for government buildings with a capacity of 200 MW has already commenced under the RESCO model using net metering systems.

As part of a pilot project, 78 Gurukul schools and hostels in Chittoor district have been selected for solar energy integration. Additionally, nearly 2,900 schools and hostels have been identified to be transformed into Net Zero and healthy campuses through solarisation initiatives.

Highlighting the economic benefits of solar adoption, Naidu stated that increased use of renewable energy in government offices and schools would significantly reduce the state’s electricity burden. He directed officials to intensify implementation efforts and improve Andhra Pradesh’s ranking in the PM Surya Ghar programme, where the state currently stands fourth nationally.

The Chief Minister also instructed departments to complete solar panel installations in all remaining SC and ST households by August-end after already covering more than 1.35 lakh homes. Under another subsidy programme targeting BC communities, the state aims to install solar systems in 10 lakh households with subsidy support of Rs 20,000 per home.

In the electric mobility sector, the government is accelerating plans for EV infrastructure development. Officials informed the Chief Minister that work has already begun on establishing 577 EV charging stations across 131 locations statewide.

The meeting also reviewed advanced technological initiatives being undertaken with support from Pravah, an organisation associated with Stanford University, along with an Artificial Intelligence Lab to reduce technical losses in the AP Eastern Power Distribution Company region. Officials revealed that Andhra Pradesh is also developing the country’s first Digital Twin Grid for power supply management.

According to officials, the state’s peak power demand between June and November 2026 is projected to touch 12,226 MW, while daily electricity demand may range between 226 and 261 million units. On May 21, Andhra Pradesh recorded a peak demand of 15,016 MW, and power consumption till May 27 stood at 7,060 million units, marking a significant rise compared to the previous year.

Separately, a delegation from the World Economic Forum met the Chief Minister to discuss the roadmap for the country’s first Thematic Centre for the Fourth Industrial Revolution (C4IR) in Andhra Pradesh. The centre, established through an agreement between AP Transco and the WEF, will focus on green energy, energy transition and cyber resilience.

Naidu directed officials to ensure that the C4IR functions with a results-oriented approach and said Andhra Pradesh’s progress should be showcased at the next Davos summit.
