The Ministry of Power has approved the export of electricity to Nepal to help the neighbouring country address an acute power shortage caused by recent floods that have severely damaged its hydropower infrastructure.
Under the approval, India will supply electricity to the Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) for 18 hours a day, from 00:00 hours to 18:00 hours, from September 13, 2026 to December 31, 2026.
The approved power export includes up to 600 MW through the Muzaffarpur-Dhalkebar 400 kV double-circuit transmission line and up to 54 MW through the Tanakpur-Mahendranagar 132 kV single-circuit transmission line. The Ministry said that the quantum of power to be exported from January 2027 onwards will be reviewed in December 2026.
The decision comes in response to widespread flood damage in Nepal, which has significantly reduced the country’s domestic hydropower generation capacity and created an urgent need for additional electricity imports to meet consumer demand.
The Ministry of Power said the approval would help Nepal meet its immediate power requirements during this challenging period while reinforcing the close and longstanding energy partnership between the two countries.
