Rooftop solar gains ground across urban India, says Joint Solar

Rooftop solar installations are steadily gaining traction across Indian cities, with public institutions, residential complexes and local authorities increasingly integrating solar energy into urban infrastructure planning, according to Joint Solar.

The transition, though gradual, marks a notable shift in how cities approach their energy needs. Rooftops of government buildings, schools, hospitals and housing societies once overlooked as energy assets are now being evaluated as viable sources of electricity generation.

Local authorities in several cities have begun linking rooftop solar adoption with building approvals and sustainability guidelines. New residential projects are being encouraged to incorporate solar systems at the design stage, enabling more efficient use of rooftop space and embedding renewable energy into everyday construction practices.

At the same time, state governments are assessing existing public infrastructure to identify opportunities for solar installations. By utilising available rooftop space, authorities aim to reduce long-term electricity expenses while promoting cleaner energy alternatives.

Efforts are also underway to streamline the adoption process. Some states have introduced digital platforms to simplify approvals and improve coordination among various agencies. A more transparent and efficient system could encourage wider participation from institutions and building owners considering solar installations.

“Solar power is slowly becoming part of everyday infrastructure discussions,” said Vinod Sharma, Director at Joint Solar. “When buildings generate some of their own electricity, it helps manage long-term energy costs while also supporting cleaner power generation.”

Rooftop solar systems offer an additional advantage by producing electricity close to the point of consumption. This localised generation can help ease pressure on traditional power grids, particularly in densely populated urban areas where demand is high.

The growing interest in decentralised solar solutions is also creating new opportunities for local businesses involved in installation, maintenance, and servicing. Industry players are already reporting increased enquiries as awareness and adoption rise.
