Honeywell to boost fuel production and workforce capabilities at Dangote Refinery

Honeywell has announced a major collaboration with the Dangote Petroleum Refinery in Lekki, Nigeria, aimed at enhancing fuel production, improving operational efficiency and strengthening workforce capabilities at the world’s largest single-train petroleum refinery.

As part of the partnership, Honeywell will deploy its Performance+ Services part of its Connected Solutions ecosystem across key processing units at the refinery. These advanced digital and automation technologies are designed to increase production of high-octane fuels from diverse feedstocks while maximising throughput and operational output.

Powered by the Honeywell Forge platform and supported by Honeywell UOP engineers, the solution will deliver real-time operational insights. This will enable refinery operators to identify potential issues early, take corrective actions, and ensure optimal performance and asset reliability.

Ken West, President and CEO of Honeywell Process Technology, emphasised the importance of digital transformation in refining operations. He noted that as global energy demand continues to rise, refineries must operate with greater agility and efficiency, adding that Honeywell’s connected technologies combine advanced automation with over a century of refining expertise.

In addition to digital solutions, Honeywell will provide advanced training and simulation tools to support workforce development. Using digital twin technology, the Operator Training Simulators (OTS) will allow refinery personnel to train in realistic operating conditions, enhancing preparedness and enabling safe testing of operational decisions.

Aliko Dangote, President of the Dangote Petroleum Refinery and Petrochemicals FZE, said the collaboration will help the facility achieve operational excellence while developing local talent to manage complex operations safely and efficiently. He highlighted the refinery’s ambition to set global benchmarks in scale, efficiency and output.

The Dangote Refinery produces Euro-V grade gasoline, diesel, and jet fuel, along with polypropylene used in plastics and packaging. Employing over 3,000 Nigerian workers, the facility is designed to meet the entirety of Nigeria’s domestic demand for refined petroleum products, with additional capacity available for export.

Building on nearly a decade-long partnership, Honeywell’s refining technologies are also expected to play a key role in expanding the refinery’s capacity from 6,50,000 barrels per day to 1.4 million barrels per day over the next three years. This expansion aims to optimise existing assets while accelerating time-to-market for refined products.
